Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has been reportedly recommended as the running mate to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.
Wike who came second at the PDP’s presidential primary, was picked as the vice presidential candidate by the committee set up on the matter.
Atiku had written to the party requesting it to recommend a running mate for him.
This warranted the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party to set up a committee of 16 – comprising sitting governors, former governors and some members of the Board of Trustees (BoT).
At the Tuesday meeting of the committee chaired by Ambassador Umaru Damagun, the national chairman of the party, Iyorchia Ayu confirmed that the presidential candidate mandated the party to pick a running mate for him.
He said, “The candidate wrote to us, as the administrative arm of the party, on the choice of his running mate.
“Various organs of the party are well-represented in his committee — the National Working Committee, the Governors Forum, the National Assembly, and former governors who have put forward their candidates.”
It was gathered that the committee is expected to submit Wike’s name to the NWC who will in turn intimate Atiku of the choice.
Mr Ayu had hinted on Tuesday that the party’s vice presidential candidate will be announce on Thursday.
