Three people have died and 121 infected due to cholera outbreak in Awe and Obi local government areas of Nasarawa State.
Deputy Director of Public Health in the state Ministry of Health, Dr. Liman Mohammed, disclosed this on Thursday in Lafia, the state capital, when he led a team on a visit to health facilities in Awe and Obi local government areas.
He said one person have died and 89 people were infected with the disease in Awe local government area.
Mohammed said two people, including a six-year-old child, have died and 32 cases recorded in Obi local government area of the state
He attributed the outbreak to indiscriminate dumping of defecation, inadequate personal and environmental hygiene, and inadequate portable community water supply.
Mohammed encouraged people of the affected areas to avert open defecation and maintain household best practices to curtail the problem.
He also urged community and environmental health workers to be proactive in the discharge of responsibilities at the grassroots.
The team also visited the Emir of Awe, Alhaji Isa Abubakar-Umar II and Osuko of Obi, Alhaji Aliyu Dangiwa Ogiri-Orume.
