The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) has confirmed the death of six persons in a boat accident on River Kaduna, in the Gbara neighborhood of Mokwa, Lavun Local Government Area of Niger State.
Five other people are still unaccounted for.l in the incident that occured on Friday night.
Confirming the incident on Saturday, director general, of NSEMA, Ibrahim Inga said boat was carrying 48 people who left Lanchikagi village in Lavun LGA and were travelling to Gbara village
He added that in the catastrophe that happened last evening, 37 people made it out alive, six dead corpses were found, and five are still missing.
Inga said in a statement that the travelers were reportedly going home after attending the weekly Friday market in Danchitagi village.
The likely cause of the accident, NSEMA said, was a torrential downpour and a strong windstorm.
The agency said search and rescue operation was still ongoing for the missing people.
