The Sokoto State Police Command has arrested nine persons over unlawful possession of firearms and live ammunition.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Ahmad Rufa’i, said four suspects — identified as Bello Ibrahim (alias “Bello Currency”), Alhaji Muhammad Danlato, Alhaji Abun Buhari, Alhaji Faruku Alhaji, and Abubakar Furniture — were apprehended during a coordinated operation in Tambuwal Local Government Area.
“Investigations revealed that Bello Ibrahim allegedly supplied the other four individuals with fabricated revolvers, which they claimed were purchased for self-defense,” Rufa’i said while briefing journalists on Friday. “However, the weapons were neither registered nor licensed, constituting a clear violation of the Firearms Act.”
The police recovered several weapons from the suspects, including fabricated revolvers, four rounds of LAR ammunition, and one round of AK-47 ammunition.
In a related incident on April 23, officers from Tureta Division intercepted one Yau Lawali of Yabawa Village, Bakura LGA in Zamfara State, during a routine stop-and-search operation. He was found in possession of two locally made firearms and three rounds of AK-47 ammunition.
Similarly, on April 19, operatives at Kebbe Division apprehended three suspects — Danagaji Bala, Sani Muhammad, and Danjuma, all from Dogon Marke village — who were seen loitering near the station in a suspicious manner. A locally made revolver and 19 rounds of AK-47 ammunition were recovered from them.
“All the suspects are in custody and will be charged accordingly under the relevant provisions of the law,” Rufa’i stated. “Investigations are ongoing to uncover any possible links to organized crime or terror-related activities.”
The Command reiterated its commitment to public safety and called on residents to report suspicious activities and refrain from acquiring weapons illegally.
