The Senate on Wednesday asked President Muhammadu Buhari to declare a state of emergency over mounting insecurity across the country.
The call came following the abduction of 27 students and 15 staff of Government Science Secondary School, Kagara, Niger State, by bandits on Wednesday morning.
This was part of the Senate resolutions which followed a motion on a matter of urgent public importance on the incident by Senator representing, Mohammed Sani Musa (APC, Niger).
The lawmakers also urged the president to implement the various recommendations of the Senate on how best to tackle insecurity.
Senate President Ahmad Lawan said the frequent incidents of kidnapping of students would reverse the gains made in school enrollment over the years in the North.
