Each of the 70 boarding schools in Kebbi state have been mandated to form a security committee to safeguard them against kidnappers.
Kebbi state neighbours, Zamfara and Niger States, have been plagued by activities of bandits, resulting in the kidnapping of over 500 students in different boarding schools last month.
Special adviser to the state government on security, Garba Kamba, who disclosed this on Monday, said the committee was a proactive measure adopted by the government.
Kamba said the committee will be headed by a traditional ruler for schools situated in his domain.
He said: “We are involving the community to safeguard their schools from any security threat. It is not possible for the government to deploy security personnel to each school in the state,” he said.
“But we are engaging the communities where schools are situated to form a committee of vigilante in collaboration with the school principals for ensuring security of the schools.
“We also provided the schools with phone numbers of heads of security agencies deployed at various points within areas where schools are located.”
The committee is to be headed by a traditional ruler for schools situated in his domain.
