Fighters of West African branch of the Islamic State group (ISWAP) have attacked Damboa, a town 90 kilometers from Maiduguri, Borno State capital, and set many house ablaze.
ISWAP is the strongest terrorist group in Nigeria since the death of Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau earlier this year.
Its leader, Abu Musab Al-Barnawi, was declared dead by Nigerian military last week.
A security source told 21st CENTURY CHRONICLE that the terrorists came in through the Biu-Damboa road around 7pm on Thursday, with about 15 gun trucks.
It was gathered that the insurgents infiltrated the town through Sabongari on that Biu-Damboa road, and started shooting sporadically..
The source said troops of 25 Task Force Brigade in Damboa engaged the insurgents, but yet to ascertain the number of casualties.
He said the troops put in their best to repel the attack.
