Ninety-one applications for the registration of new political parties have been submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
INEC’s Election and Parties Monitoring Department, through the Director of Voter Education and Publicity, Victoria Eta-Messi, revealed this on Wednesday.
But registered political parties have expressed mixed reactions to the new move.
While some welcome the new development, others accused the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led federal Government of frustrating the new applicants.
According to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), the number showed disunited opposition leaders, while the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) said it was proof the APC was incompetent.
For the Labour Party (LP), it is a welcome development but asked INEC to carefully review all applications before proceeding with registration.
