The authorities must be mindful of the role that drugs play in fueling banditry and other vices, else we will only end up killing the snake without severing its head, the Governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal, has said.
He said this when he received Sheikh Ahmad Gummi who has been preaching to bandits in the forest to embrace peace, in Sokoto on Saturday.
He said a governor colleague had told him that female dairy hawkers, known to sell yoghurt made from cow milk and millet, have been supplying drugs to bandits.
“For this reason, we must act to overcome this menace of drug trafficking and drug abuse,” he said.
Tambuwal said Islam is a religion of peace and propagating peace will assist in salvaging people who were neck deep in the unfortunate trade of kidnapping, Boko Haram and wanton destruction of lives and property.
“Had there been adequate upbringing of Muslims on the fear of God and the responsibilities of Muslims on their fellow Muslims, much of these ugly situations would not have arise,” he said.
Earlier, Gumi said if the situation of insecurity in the Northern part of the country is left unchecked and leaders and followers disunited it would engender chaos and disunity.
