Floods have destroyed over 200 houses in Zaria and Sabongari LGs in Kaduna State.
This was revealed during a press briefing by Dr. Usman Hayatu Mazadu, Executive Secretary of the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency.
He said despite flood warnings some residents refuse to evacuate, leading to substantial damage.
Dr Mazadu said the state government had taken steps to address the flood’s impact, including desilting drainage systems and running awareness campaigns.
He urged those in flood-prone areas to evacuate immediately.
The severe flooding affected Sabon Gari and Zaria LGAs on Monday despite their mitigation efforts.
He lamented that the flood has caused major damage, destroying over 200 homes.
“We received flood predictions from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) three months ago and took proactive steps to prepare.
“Our assessment highlighted three main issues: poor drainage, refuse dumping, and structures blocking waterways. We reported these findings to the governor, who ordered a statewide desilting of drainage systems,” he said.
He also encouraged residents, especially farmers, to utilize alternative land provided by the state for farming and relocate to urban areas.
