The Benue State Livestock Guards have arrested one Atsagba Ukua and his son for rustling six cows from herdsmen.
Special Adviser to the Governor on Security Matters, Paul Hembah, told journalists on Saturday in Makurdi that the suspects were arrested on their way to sell the cows at the cattle market in North Bank, Makurdi.
He said the guards who were on patrol interrogated them, and Ukua said the animals destroyed his farm produce and he impounded the animals in order to sell as compensation for his damaged farm produce.
The Security Adviser said the state’s ranching law forbids acts of self-help. He said the suspects would be handed over to the Police for prosecution, while the rustled animals would be handed over to the leadership of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association for onward presentation to the owner.
