A total of 187 deaths as a result of auto accidents were recorded in both Edo and Lagos states so far in this year, according to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
The Edo State Command said 113 of the deaths were recorded in the state between January and September 2022.
The state sector commander, Mr Henry Benemaisia said the deaths were from about 193 crashes, adding that 58 were fatal, 106 serious and 29 minor, while 456 persons were involved in the accidents.
Banamaisia revealed that 477 persons sustained various degrees of injuries, noting that the figures were alarming and called for concerted effort amongst all to curtail/curb the carnage.
Similarly, in Lagos State, 74 deaths were recorded in various traffic crashes in the second quarter of 2022 in the state.
The Zonal Commanding Officer, Asst. Corp Marshal, Peter Kibo, represented by the Lagos Sector Commander, Corps Commander Olusegun Ogungbemide said 232 people were injured within the period.
According to him, 10 deaths were recently recorded in the Ishagamu fire accident.
He said road safety and management were everybody’s business.
Kibo said though the gridlock in Lagos helps in reducing accidents, excess speed, lack of discipline and failure to oobey traffic rules have resulted in road crashes in the state.
The zonal commander urged commuters to always caution drivers against speeding and other actions inimical to road safety.
Kibo also cautioned against night journey, saying that 50 per cent of deaths recorded in 2022 happened in the night.
