The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has disclosed that the 11 electricity distribution companies (DISCOS) in the country generated a total of N260.16 billion in the third quarter of 2023.
This was contained in its latest power sector report tagged: Nigeria Electricity Report: Energy Billed, Revenue Generated And Customers By DISCOS (Q3 2023) released on Wednesday.
According to the report, the generated amount billion shows an increase from N263.08 billion generated in the preceding quarter (Q2 2023).
On a year-on-year basis, revenue generated in the reference period rose by 28.40 per cent from N202.62 billion recorded in Q3 2022.
Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC) generated the highest revenue in the review period with N56,803.11 million; followed by Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) N42,454.00 million; Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) N39,946.00 million; Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) N27,516.00 million; Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) N 21,442.20 million; and Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) N19,117.00 million.
Others are Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PEDC) N17,930.47 million; Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDC) N12,827.57 million; Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JEDC) N8,954.10 million; Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (KDEDC) N7,573.82 million; and Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC) N5,593.74 million.
It further showed that the total customer numbers in Q3 2023 stood at 11.71 million from 11.47 million in Q2 2023, showing an increase of 2.08 per cent. On a year-on-year basis, customer numbers in Q3 2023 rose by 7.09 per cent from 10.94 million reported in Q3 2022.
IBEDC has the highest number of customers, 2,350,136, followed by AEDC 1,388,325; EEDC 1,295,510, BEDC 1,291,181; IEDC 1,118,429; KDEDC 831,210; PEDC 727,430; JEDC 722,731; EKEDC 681,000; KEDC 674,904; and YEDC 632,330.
Similarly, metered customers stood at 5.68 million in Q3 2023, indicating a growth of 3.77 per cent from 5.47 million recorded in the preceding quarter, with IBEDC having the highest number of metered customers (1,020,761). On a year-on-year basis, this grew by 13.07 per centfrom the figure reported in Q3 2022 which was 5.02 million.
In addition, estimated customers during the quarter were 6.03 million, higher by 0.53 per cent from 6.00 million in Q2 2023, with IBEDC having the highest number of unmetered customers (1,329,375). On a year-on-year basis, estimated customers increased by 2.02 per cent in Q3 2023 from 5.91 million in Q3 2022. Revenue collected by the DISCOs during the period was N260.16
Electricity supply was 5,731.60 (Gwh) in Q3 2023 from 5,909.83 (Gwh) in the previous quarter, with IEDC getting the highest supply (1121.05). However, on a year-on-year basis, electricity supply increased by 14.09 per cent compared to 5,023.96 (Gwh) reported in Q3 2022.
The NBS said the data was provided by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and verified and validated by it.
