The cybersecurity levy is one of the surest ways of funding counter-terror operations and Nigerians must support its implementation to end all forms of insecurity ravaging the country.
This was revealed by a civil society organization, Nigeria First (NF-PRO), in a press conference held in Abuja on Tuesday.
Addressing the press conference, the Coordinator of the group, Hamza Umar Saulawa and its Director of Research and Documentation Bishir Dauda Sabuwar Kofa, said the levy is one sacrifice that Nigerians must make to endure the total obliteration of all forms of insecurity in the country.
The CSO said, “it is important for Nigerians to note that cybercrime is not only undermining Nigeria’s economy, but also has continued to tarnish our image globally.”
They said innocent and hardworking Nigerians have continued to lose their hard-earned fortune to cybercriminals, with the country losing over $500 million every year to cybercrime.
“Another frightening trend,” according to the CSO, “is many young people are joining the illicit cybercrime venture to make fast money. Some of these youth wrongly think that going to school is a scam.”
The Nigeria First Project said, the 0.5 percent cybersecurity levy is “an opportunity to reverse this trend.”
However, the CSO said, some unpatriotic Nigerians out of sheer selfishness are opposing the levy to be paid only by some corporate institutions.
The CSO, therefore, declared its support for the levy and call “on all patriotic Nigerians to rally behind the federal government in its noble determination to rid our nation of any vestige of criminality, cybercrimes and terrorism inclusive.”
