The House of Representatives has resolved to investigate allegations of bribery against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in the case of money laundering charges against Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky.
The resolution was sequel to a motion by Rep. Patrick Umoh (APC- Akwa Ibom) at plenary on Thursday.
Moving the motion, Umoh said Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) was also fingered in the disturbing allegation.
He said that the allegation which emanated from Mr Martins Otse, a social media influencer known as Very Dark Man, was widely circulated.
The lawmaker said that it was alleged that the EFCC dropped money laundering charges against Bobrisky upon collection of the sum of N15 million.
“The publication alleged that Idris Okuneye, upon conviction for abuse and defacing of the Naira by the court, did not serve his time at the Nigeria Correctional Service, but was lodged outside the confines of the service.
“The house is disturbed by the damning allegations against Nigeria’s critical law enforcement agencies, EFCC and NCS, established by these hallowed chambers to fight corruption and incarcerate persons convicted of crime for correctional purposes.
“Worried about the negative image and portrayal of Nigeria as a corrupt nation which Nigeria still struggles to redeem itself from such perception, a committee composed of persons of unquestionable integrity to immediately probe the allegation be set up to investigate these allegations,” he said.
In his ruling, the Speaker of the House said an Ad hoc Committee would be set up to investigate the allegations and report back within three legislative weeks.
