The Sokoto State Executive Council has approved the purchase of 30 patrol vehicles and 700 motorcycles for its community guards.
The Commissioners of Information, Religious Affairs, Local Government and Higher Education, Sambo Danchadi, Dr Jabir Maihula disclosed in a joint briefing on Thursday.
The commissioners, noted that the guards would be recruited from 13 local government affected by insecurity in the state.
According to them, 150 persons would be recruited from each of the local government areas.
While signing the Community Guards bill into law, Governor Ahmed Aliyu said, the guards were not state police as insinuated in some quarters.
“It is our local arrangement to augment the activities of conventional secuty outfits in the state.
“So they are not state police. I want the security agencies in the state to know that they are not their rivals.
“Their work is to assist security agencies in protecting their areas by providing intelligence report among other things,” he said
He however, called on the people of the state to support and cooperate with the government in its effort to tackle insecurity in the state.
