Plateau State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development , Mrs Rebecca Sambo, has said the celebration of the Armed Forces Remembrance Day would help to connect with families of fallen heroes.
Sambo, made the remarks in a statement on Wednesday in Jos, saying the event was organized annually to honour ex-service men who laid down their lives in service to humanity.
She noted that many soldires had died during the First and Second World Wars, Nigerian Civil War, Peace Support and Internal Security operations.
The commissioner said President Muhammadu Buhari had launched the 2023-Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration Emblem.
She said thereafter, states were expected to launch their emblems to support the State Councils of the Nigerian Legion.
Sambo said it was indeed worthwhile and even noble to honour distinguished veterans who devoted significant part of their lives to the service of the country.
“They have displayed unalloyed loyalty and commitment to Nigeria beyond words of gratitude,” said Sambo.
She added that the event was also recognized and celebrated internationally every Nov. 11 each year to honour the military men that laid down their lives during the world Wars.
The Commissioner urged Nigerians to reflect on the historical event, Jan. 15 specially selected for the celebration to remember the date that Nigerian Civil War ended.
“I call on people of Plateau State to see this as our solemn responsibility to share in the pains of their families left behind.
“This is why the Nigeria Legion is high among charitable Organizations of note, desed erving our patronage both as a government and as a people,” she said.
The commissioner said that emblem appeal fund would be launched on Dec. 29 by the governor as part of the celebration and also wreath laying.
The Chairman, Nigeria Legion Plateau State Council, , Col. Sati Riwang , appealed to everyone to come to the aid of the families of the fallen heroes.
Riwang said the emblem appeal fund launch would enable the council to provide necessary support for the various families.
