The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has taken former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, into custody an hour after he was let off by the Department of State Services.
The PUNCH reports that Emefiele is currently being grilled at the EFCC National Headquarters after its operatives picked him up Thursday night.
The anti graft agency is investigating the former CBN governor over alleged impropriety .
The DSS has been keeping the former apex bank governor since June after President Bola Tinubu ordered his suspension from office
Emefiele was was directed to hand over his one of the CBN governors , Folashodun Shonubi, in charge of Operations Directorate
Twenty fours after, the DSS arrested Emefiele for ‘some investigative reasons’.
On July 25, Emefiele appeared in a federal high court in Lagos charged with “illegal possession” of firearms but was granted bail in N20 million.
The court vacated two-count charge on August 17 after the Federal Government withdrew the same.
Subsequently, a fresh 20-count charge was made against him for conspiracy to carry out procurement fraud, among others.
The arraignment could not hold twice, and Emefiele has proposed a plea bargain agreement with the FG to resign as CBN governor and ‘disgorge’ some assets.
However, on September 22, the CBN officially confirmed Emefiele’s resignation after Olayemi Cardoso was appointed as substantive governor of the apex bank.
