The Department of State Services (DSS) claims to have unearthed plots to orchestrate violent protests in order to tarnish the federal administration and security agencies over “various socioeconomic issues.”
Student leaders, teenagers, ethnic-based groupings, and disaffected groups are being mobilized for the protests, according to the security agency.
The DSS stated that the “ring leaders of the plot” have been identified and are being watched.
According to intelligence inputs, those masterminding the violent protests include politicians, according to DSS spokesperson Peter Afunanya in a statement made on Monday.
Afunanya stated that the “masterminds” will be prevented from “throwing the country into anarchy.”
The service encouraged university vice chancellors and tertiary institution chiefs to prevent their students from engaging in conduct that could destabilize public order.
“Also, parents and guardians are enjoined to admonish their children and wards respectively to shun the lure of participating in inimical behaviours or conducts against law and order,” Afunanya said.
The DSS warned those “desirous” of subverting national security to retrace their steps.
The DSS revelation comes on the heels of the planned two-day strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) scheduled to start on Tuesday.
The labour union’s planned strike is to protest the impact of petrol subsidy removal on the masses.
