The Management of the Golf Section of Kano Club has expressed worry with the revocation of its Certificate of Occupancy (CoO) by the State Government.
The Spokesperson of the Club, Alhaji Ahmed Tanko, on Wednesday in Kano said credible information at their disposal indicated that the state government has reallocated the plot to private developers.
He, however, said they were awaiting advice from their legal team on what to do, adding that no club of such status had been taken over by government all over the world
Tank said the state government through some private estate developers was trying to take over the club, which he said is the oldest existing golf club in northern Nigeria because it was established in 1908 by the British colonial masters and handed over to Nigerians in Kano.
“Similarly, we have been up to date in the payment of ground rent on a yearly basis. This is a rude shock to the Golf community in Kano because the club has its Certificate of Occupancy.
“The history of the Golf club cannot be isolated from the history of Kano as a metropolis. So, there is no reason why anyone will continue to disturb us,” he explained.
He said the management of the club experienced similar threat recently but it was amicably resolved.
He, therefore, appealed to individuals who have stake in the facility to come to their rescue, adding that it is a Golf club Northern Nigeria should be proud of.
The state Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Alhaji Mohammed Garba, allayed fears of the revocation and urged the public to disregard the speculation.
Garba however confirmed that the state Bureau for Land Management only reminded the Golf Club management on the need to renew its title right and ground rent which had expired since April 6, 1979.
The commissioner added that there was no issue of revocation in the correspondence and as such the status of the Golf Club remained.
