The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, says repatriation of the £4.2 million allegedly
looted by a former Governor of Delta State James Ibori, due to issues relating to documentation of funds transfers.
Malami said this in a statement on Monday by his media aide, Dr Umar Gwandu.
The AGF had on March 9, Malami, signed an agreement, on behalf of the Federal Government, with the British High Commissioner to Nigeria Catriona Laing, on the repatriation of the funds.
An announcement that the funds would be used to complete ongoing federal government projects stirred a controversy, as the Delta State Government and civil society groups demanded that the funds be returned to Delta.
“Documentations with the banks in different countries often take longer than anticipated. We anticipated two weeks but we are not in control of the banks,” Malami said.
“There is neither complacency nor any delay as efforts are being made to ensure successful transfer of the looted funds,” he said.
