The ruling Labour Party in Abia State has failed to win a single chairmanship seat in the Saturday local government elections.
The opposition Zenith Labour Party has won 15 local councils, and Young Progressives Congress winning two.
The Chairman, Abia State Independent Electoral Commission Chairman, Prof. Chima George announced the results.
Abia is the second state after Rivers where the ruling party at the state failed to win any seat in the local government elections.
In Rivers, the Action Peoples Party (APP) won in all but one of the 23 LGs, leaving the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with nothing.
It was believed that Governor Simi Fubara deployed his supporters to contest under the APP because of his intractable conflict with his predecessor and Minister of FCT, Nyesom Wike.
It was not clear if Governor Alex Otti also played the Fubara scripts by directing his supporters to contest under the ZLP because of the leadership crisis rocking the party at the national level.
Professor George, who announced the results in the ABSIEC office, said the election was peaceful.
He said, “I congratulate the winners and the losers too, because in any election there must be winners and losers. The most important thing is that Abia has been peaceful and I want the peace to continue.
“I appreciate the security agencies for their support, political parties for playing the game according to the rule,” Chima said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that ZLP won in Isiala Ngwa South, Isiala Ngwa North, Umuahia North, Umuahia South, Ukwa East, Ukwa West, Obingwa, Aba North, Aba South, Isuikwuato, Umunneochi, Arochukwu, Bende, and Ohafia LGAs.
The remaining two LGAs of Osisioma and Ugwunagbo were won by YPP.
