The Kano State House of Assembly has adjourned indefinitely since the passage of the controversial Kano Emirate Bill 2024.
The new law abolished the four new emirates of Rano, Gaya, Karaye and Bichi; dethroned Emir of Kano Aminu Ado Bayero; and led to the reappointment of Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as the new emir.
The development created series of legal battles, general chaos that leaves Kano with two emirs ever since.
However, the assembly has not held plenary since the passage of the law, creating speculations that the lawmakers ran away for fear of attacks by proponents of the disbanded emirates and emirs.
The spokesperson to the Speaker, Kamaluddeen Shawai told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday that the viral news “is simply fake and baseless”.
Shawai urged the good people of the state to disregard any report insinuating that the assembly has not reopened for plenary due to insecurity caused by emirate tussle.
“The purported fear of attacks and delay in resuming the plenary are nothing but the works of mischievous elements within society.
“The assembly will resume plenary very soon,” he assured.
He reiterated the assembly’s commitment to work with Gov. Abba Kabir -Yusuf for the overall development of the state.
Shawai urged the residents to keep praying for peace and unity in the state and the country as a whole.
