Seven health workers with Kwami and Billiri local government primary healthcare departments, Gombe State, have been arrested for diverting 5,450 Insecticides Treated Nets (ITNs) meant for free distribution in their communities.
The state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Habu Dahiru, disclosed this Saturday.
The state government, with support from Global Fund, the Catholic Relief Services, and the National Malaria Elimination Programme are sponsors of free distribution of the nets.
Dahiru said that the ITNs were meant to reduce the burden of malaria amongst women and children in the state.
He said a total of 5,000 nets were recovered from Kwami, while 450 nets were recovered from Billiri. He added that the nets would be distributed to the targeted persons in the two local government areas.
The commissioner warned against the sale of the nets, stressing that “these nets are for the poor and must get to them free of charge. No-one should pay for them.’’
