Elder statesman, Alhaji Bashir Tofa, says continuous zoning of the position of president among the geo-political zones is detrimental to the unity of the country.
Tofa, the Presidential candidate of National Republic Convention (NRC) in the 1993 presidential election said this in an interview with a media house.
He said zoning is a continual propagation of a “divisive presidency, rather than the one that will serve all Nigerians equally and justly.”
Tofa blamed the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the country’s backwardness which he said its perpetrated by its zoning policy.
“The PDP started this foolish idea. They have damaged the political climate of this country while thinking it was for the best. Now it has become what may destroy this country if care is not taken,” he said.
He said unlike in 1993 presidential election when the Social Demoicratic Party presidential candidate and vice presidential candidates were Muslims, Nigeria “is now too polarised for the Muslim-Muslim or Christian-Christian ticket to be dared by any party.”
