The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced the processes to create additional polling units (PUs) across the country ahead of the 2023 general election.
The National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee (IVEC), Festus Okoye, said this on Tuesday in Abuja after the commission’s management meeting.
Nigeria, at present, has 119,973 PUs and over 57,000 voting points (VPs), a number the INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, had earlier said was inadequate.
The INEC had in 2014 proposed to create additional 30, 027 polling units, but later abandoned the plan due to controversy since the Northern part of the country will get the highest number.
Okoye said the commission would engage stakeholders on the planned expansion of voter access to the Pus, adding that the commission had been preparing for the engagement to address PUs inadequacies in the country and the challenges they pose to election management.
