The Zamfara State University, Talata-Mafara, Amendment Bill on Friday scaled second reading at the state House of Assembly.
This followed the presentation of the basic principles of the bill by the Majority Leader, Bello Mazawaje (PDP-Tsafe East) during plenary.
Mazawaje said the amendment bill was an executive bill as it emanated from the State Government, adding that passing it would enable the university to function like sister federal and states universities across the country.
“I am therefore appealing to the lawmakers to support this motion considering its importance to the education development of the state,” he said.
Contributing, Amiru Keta (PDP-Tsafe West) described the bill as a welcome development.
Keta, also the Chairman, House committee on Information, said the condition of the university was worrisome.
The lawmakers unanimously voted in favour of the passage of the bill for second reading.
The Speaker, Bilyaminu Moriki, directed the Clerk, Mr Mamuda Aliyu to give it its first and second reading.
Moriki thereafter referred the bill to the House Joint Committee on Education and Judiciary for scrutiny to report back in two weeks.
