Seventy-five students of Government Day Secondary School, Kaya in Zamfara State have been released by their captors after 13 days in captivity.
The students, who were mostly in senior secondary school II, and the vice-principal of the school, were abducted on September 1, while preparing for their mock exams.
A day after their abduction, five students, all females, escaped from their captors.
Zamfara State Governor Bello Matawalle confirmed the release of the students.
In a one-minute long video clip posted on one of his media aide’s official Facebook pages, the governor was seen interacting with some of the female students before they were ushered into the hall at the Government House, Gusau.
One of the students, while narrating their ordeal, said their abductors kept threatening them with guns and knives, and threatened to kill them.
Another close aide to the governor, who pleaded anonymity, told 21st CENTURY CHRONICLE Sunday night that the students were released without any ransom being paid.
“Even before the security measures were taken, we were in contact with the bandits and now coupled with the measures, they decided to release the students because they were not ready to risk their lives. They have also released many other captives in Tsafe, Maru and Zurmi areas,” he said.
