Gov. Abba Yusuf of Kano State has announced the donation of N100 million to the traders affected by the recent inferno at the popular Kantin Kwari textile market .
The Governor made this announcement during a sympathy visit to the market, where he expressed his sympathy to the affected businessmen.
This is contained in a statement by his spokesman, Bature Dawakin- Tofa in Kano on Thursday.
The donation was aimed at mitigating the effects of the damages to the affected traders, rather than serve as a compensation for their losses.
Yusuf also promised to improve the market’s infrastructure, through the installation of solar-powered lights, rehabilitation of road networks, construction of drainages and provision of motorized boreholes.
The governor urged the market management to initiate programmes that would assist the hundreds of thousands of traders conducting their businesses without hitches.
He emphasized the state government’s commitment to maintaining Kano’s status as the commercial nerve centre in Northern Nigeria and some West African countries.
The fire incident destroyed 29 shops, but due to the quick response of fire service operatives and kind-hearted individuals, the spread of the fire was contained.
The Chairman of the Market Elders’ Committee, Alhaji Sabiu Bako, thanked the governor for his concern and called for help in solving the market’s operational problems.
