France defeated Paraguay 1-0 in the Round of 16 match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, advancing to the quarter-finals after a disciplined and patient performance.

The encounter was expected to test France’s attacking quality against Paraguay’s resilience.

It eventually lived up to expectations as both sides produced a competitive display.

France started brightly and controlled much of the possession in the opening exchanges, moving the ball confidently across the pitch and searching for spaces in Paraguay’s defence.

Paraguay, however, remained compact and organised, frustrating the French attackers with a solid defensive structure and showing determination whenever they were called upon to defend.

The south Americans also attempted to create opportunities on the counterattack, using their pace and direct approach to unsettle France, although neither side was able to produce a breakthrough in the first half.

France’s growing urgency was evident in the 19th minute when Bradley Barcola received a yellow card as the intensity of the contest increased.

In spite of their dominance in possession, France found it difficult to convert their control into clear goalscoring chances.

Paraguay continued to show discipline and composure to keep the score goalless at the interval.

Paraguay returned for the second half with renewed energy, making tactical adjustments aimed at adding more attacking threat.

Juan Canale replaced Omar Alderete in the 58th minute before Gabriel Caballero came on for Julio Enciso in the 61st minute as Paraguay sought to increase their presence in midfield and attack.

France also responded by introducing Désiré Doué for Bradley Barcola in the 61st minute, a substitution that added fresh movement and creativity to their attacking play.

The pressure from the French side eventually yielded results in the 70th minute when Kylian Mbappe converted from the penalty spot to hand his side a deserved lead after sustained attacking efforts.

The goal shifted the momentum of the game, forcing Paraguay to push more players forward in search of an equaliser.

Paraguay made additional changes in the 71st minute, with Mauricio Magalhães replacing Gustavo Gomez and Gabriel Avalos coming on for Miguel Almiron.

The south Americans fought hard in the closing stages and attempted to apply pressure on the French defence, but France remained calm and organised, limiting Paraguay to few meaningful opportunities.

France continued to manage the game effectively, focusing on maintaining possession and slowing the tempo whenever possible.

Manu Kone received a yellow card in the 81st minute as France sought to protect their advantage.

Rayan Cherki replaced Ousmane Dembele in the 84th minute to provide fresh legs and help see out the match.

Michael Olise was also booked in the seventh minute of added time, but France held firm until the final whistle to seal their place in the quarter-finals.

France and Paraguay have shared only a limited World Cup history, having previously met in the 1958 group stage and in the Round of 16 at the 1998 FIFA World Cup.

France’s latest triumph strengthens their superior record against Paraguay on football’s biggest stage and highlights their ability to grind out results even when faced with stubborn opposition.

For Paraguay, the defeat marked the end of a spirited campaign.

Their disciplined display and determination against one of the tournament favourites earned admiration in spite of their elimination.

The match was played at the Philadelphia Stadium in Philadelphia, United States.
