The Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation–Americas (NiDOA) has called on the U.S. government to partner the Federal Government in tackling issues bothering on security and violent crimes, rather than resort to bridging the nation’s national sovereignty.
The Continental Chair of NiDOA, Dr Victor Ubani, stated the position of the organisation in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday.
He spoke against the backdrop of the designation of Nigeria by President Donald Trump, as “a country of particular concern’’ and threat of potential military action in the country over alleged failure to protect Christians.
Ubani appealed to the federal government to deploy a multi-pronged diplomatic strategy in tackling the U.S. concerns through dialogue, coordination, transparency and engagement of critical multi-stakeholders.
“While we are aware of the mixed feelings rising from the designation of Nigeria as a country of particular concern by President Trump, we implore the Federal Government to explore all diplomatic strategies in ensuring amicable resolution of such designation.
“While we also appreciate the U.S. concerns about the lives of Nigerians at home, we believe Nigeria will emerge even stronger amid Trump’ threats,’’ he said.
Ubani also urged the federal government to take decisive actions aimed at addressing the security situation, by bringing culprits of violent crimes in the country to book.
He underscored the need for compatriots to stay calm and to shun any act capable of truncating the government’s move to foster peace and stability in the country.
“We enjoin compatriots at home and abroad to shun sentiments and unite at this critical moment.
“This is not the time for division or rhetoric but a time for nation building. It is a great time to rebrand Nigeria’s image and to bring about sustainable peace.
“By doing so, we will change negative narratives perceived about Nigeria and forge a new path toward attaining greater heights,” he said.
Ubani pledged that NiDOA would work more closely with the federal government, Nigerians at home and abroad in strengthening the sovereignty of the country.
According to him, it is only when Nigerians work closely together that there can be a more meaningful and sustainable growth at this cross section of challenges facing the nation.
