The Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria (MWAN) has stated that though the federal government’s ‘Budget of Fiscal Sustainability and Transition’ recorded the largest sum allocation to the health sector in the country’s history, the N1.16 trillion for the sector which accounts for just 5.3% of the budget for the year is still less than the 15% Abuja declaration of 2001 pact.
This was disclosed in Kano by MWAN Kano chapter chairperson Dr Rahila Mukhtar during the 3rd National Executive Council Meeting held in Kano. According to her, it is also commendable to reintroduction of the family planning budget line for child spacing services with a N20 million commitment as part of the scale-up measure of the national family planning program and services implementation adding that this is not in keeping with the FP2030 recommitment of 1% of the health budget
She explained that in Kano state and throughout the country MWAN has worked with the Development Research and Projects Centre (dRPC), in advocating for accountability as policy advocacy partners and health workers to ensure adequate financing and implementation of child and family health programs.
In her address MWAN national President Dr Lillian Adekemi Otolorin stated that the association has achieved a lot in its history of existence adding that in the year 2022 many members of the association have stood up and earned various leadership positions across the country
