Women farmers under the auspices of the Shefarmers Association, have called for urgent land reforms to address issues that hinder women from overcoming challenges to farming in Nigeria.
Grand Patron of the association, Aminu Saleh, made the call at an event to mark the first anniversary of the association.
He said the Association was conceived in 2021 to provide support to women with necessary tools due to the many disadvantages they face.
Saleh called on Shefarmers Association to take up the challenges which include raising credit facilities, inadequate skills, cultural and social barriers especially discrimination and limited access to technology.
Mandate Secretary for Women Affairs Secretariat, Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), Adedayo Benjamins-Laniyi, in an address at the event, held in Abuja on Thursday, called for more investment in women, which she said is investment in the community.
Chairperson of the Association, Maimuna Abdullahi Habib, who spoke on the events theme “Women Overcoming Challenges of Entrepreneurship and Food Security in Nigeria,” said women farmers are trailblazers who are committed to redefining agriculture in Nigeria.
She said Shefarmers Association is dedicated to empowering women who play an indispensable role in agriculture and, in most of our rural communities, work hard to sustain families.
Highpoint of the event was the launch of the National Shefarmers Livestock Project.
