National Alliance for Legislation and Good Governance (NALGG) has revealed that Northern Nigeria contributed the most votes, which ensured Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and APC’s victory in the 2023 presidential polls.
It said it was the region that gave APC 38.9% out of the total votes cast, adding that out of that figure, Northwest alone gave 27.3% to ensure victory at the polls, an edge the group termed as enough for the party to cede the senate president seat to Kano.
This was contained in a statement issued in Kano and jointly signed by the group’s Convener Comrade Muhammad Auwal and its Secretary Dr Mujitapha Bello.
It further explained that based on the developments, the group had called on the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) to cede the senate presidency position to Northwest, and also micro-zone the post to Kano, for political expediency.
Similarly, the statement added that as a body of experts, that includes academia, social commentators as well as other professional bodies whose roles in legislation process and good governance in the country can’t be over emphasized, the group we feel compelled to make its position bold, as well as its submissions, on what and how the next leadership of the 10th National Assembly should look like.
“We call on the APC, the President-elect and others stakeholders to put things in order, do a comprehensive stocktaking and reflect on the immense contribution the Northwest made in ensuring victory for the party, and zone the Presidency of the Senate to the Northwest, and further micro-zone it to Kano State, in which lies the most experienced and ranking Senator in the entire region, it is apparently clear that Senator Barau I. Jibrin should be the next Senate President, for he has the competence, capacity and cognate experience to lead the 10th senate assembly,” said the statement.
