I prefer to focus on my personal life after years in public service than taking another appointment, former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayo Fayose, has said.
Fayose disclosed this on Wednesday during Politics Today programme, aired on Channels Television, saying it was for this reason he turned down President Bola Tinubu’s appointment.
He said he has a long-standing personal relationship with President Tinubu, adding that he had no intention of joining or accepting any political role under the All Progressives Congress (APC) government.
“Have you seen me taking appointments from the APC? Asiwaju asked me, ‘What would we give you?’ I said, ‘Nothing, sir.’
“At 65, I’d rather be at home, being more responsible, doing other things that I need to do.
“I’ve served well. Two-time governor, I’ve done well. Tomorrow will hold itself,” Fayose stated.
He said he would continue to be friends with Tinubu, but their relationship did not translate into political alignment.
“I’ve not been with the APC, but I’ve been Asiwaju’s friend and brother for a long time. That is the truth,” he said.
According to Fayose, only Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, vai command the kind of traction and national appeal needed to challenge the ruling APC during the 2027 election.
“Tell me who would defeat the APC? The only opposition that I know of is in Nigeria. I am not saying that Asiwaju will win. The only person that has traction is Obi.
“Despite not being in government, he is the only one talking and everywhere. I will give it to him,” Fayose said.
