Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, has said the committee working on the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill has not submitted its report to the House.
He was responding to an observation by a member who said his constituents have been calling him to demand why the lawmakers would refuse electronic transfer of election results.
He said media reports suggesting that the lawmakers have removed electronic transfer of election results from the Electoral Act amendment bill has been causing unnecessary tension in the polity even when the committee working on the Act is yet to submit the same.
21st CENTURY CHRONICLE reports that civil society groups have called on the leadership of the National Assembly to ensure that the outcome of the exercise ended years of malpractices and fraud that hitherto characterised the country’s elections.
The calls were sequel to reports and rumours that the lawmakers have rejected key recommendations in the Electoral Act amendment bill, including electronic transmission of results of an election and expenses for presidential candidates.
“I have asked the Chairman of the Committee and she told me that she was not aware of that,” the Speaker said.
