Water scarcity has persisted in Sokoto metropolis despite the ultimatum issued by the state Governor Aminu Tambuwal to the officials of the Water Board to restore water supply or face sanctions.
Tambuwal, through the Commissioner for Water Resources Umar Bature, had last week threatened to suspend management staff of the state water board if they failed to restore water supply to the state capital before Friday.
However, less than 24 hours to the expiration of the ultimatum, the state capital is still without public water supply.
The state capital has been thrown into water scarcity for weeks due to the ongoing construction of flyover bridges.
A resident of one of the affected areas, Malam Abdulmumini told 21st CENTURY CHRONICLE that he bought water everyday from vendors, which he said cost N100 per jerry can.
A civil servant who sought anonymity also complained of acute shortage of potable water in his area.
“The whole of my area is facing water shortage but I heard the governor pleading for patient on the radio,” he said
The Social Democratic Party (SDP) governorship candidate in the last election in the state, Eng. Abdullahi Waziri, had accused the state government of not doing enough to improve the supply.
