The Senate has suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (Kogi Central, PDP) for six months.
The suspension was handed down on Thursday at the senate plenary.
The action followed a report submitted by the Senate Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct, and Public Petitions read by its chairman, Senator Neda Imasuen.
The senate panel has recommended a six-month suspension of the senator.
During the plenary, Senate President Godswill Akpabio called for a vote.
They also voted not to reconsider the vote before the six-month period elapses or she apologises.
Mr Imasuen said Natasha’s office will be locked during this period, and she will have no access to the National Assembly’s premises over the span of her suspension.
Her salary and those of her legislative aides would also be suspended during this time.
The committee said that for her to appeal her suspension, she must tender a written apology to the Senate for violating its rules.
Abba Moro, the Senate minority leader from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), endorsed the ethics committee report.
He metaphorically described Natasha as “a child” who needed a beating for misbehaviour.
He said, “As Nigerians, we have a tradition; if you beat your child with the right hand, you draw that child with the left hand.”
Senator Natasha had earlier accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of sexual harassment and abuse of office.
This was sequel to a heated arguments between Natasha and Akpabio over sitting arrangement.
She submitted a petition to the committee on ethics, which was given four weeks to refer back to the senate.
