Seventeen students of Kano University of Science and Technology (KUST), Wudil, have been arrested for allegedly harassing a female student who wore Abaya (a free-flowing Arabian dress).
The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Shehu Alhaji, disclosed this to journalists in Kano.
A video that went viral on the social media showed how the lady was circled by a group of students, harassing and mocking a lady with chants of ‘Mai Abaya’.
The video attracted the attention of the public who called on the institution’s management to take immediate action on the matter before it leads to anarchy.
Alhaji said the authorities swung into action after receiving the report of the assault and the arrests were made.
He said the university had constituted a committee, headed by DVC Academics, to identify the unscrupulous students involved and recommend immediate disciplinary actions to be taken against the culprits without delay, to serve as deterrent to others.
