A Kano State High Court has sentenced two men to death by hanging for 2016 killing of one Buhari Imam, a lecturer at Northwest University, Kano, during a violent robbery attack.
Delivering judgment on Monday, Justice Fatima Adamu found Aliyu Hussaini of Sheka Sabuwar Abuja Quarters and Amir Zakariyya of Unguwar Malam Quarters, Kumbotso Local Government area guilty of conspiracy, armed robbery, and culpable homicide.
“The defendants’ actions reveal a complete disregard for the sanctity of human life. Accordingly, they are each sentenced to five years’ imprisonment for conspiracy, 10 years for armed robbery without an option of fine, and death by hanging for culpable homicide. May God have mercy on their souls, the judge ruled”
Prosecution counsel, Lamido Abba-Sorondinki, told the court that on June 11, 2016, the convicts conspired, armed themselves with knives and machetes, and attacked the lecturer at his Sheka residence, robbing him of his phone and inflicting fatal stab wounds on his stomach, thigh, and back.
Similarly, to prove its case, the prosecution called three witnesses and tendered medical reports and photographs of the deceased, which the court admitted as evidence. However, despite denying the charges, the court held that the prosecution had established its case beyond reasonable doubt. As the offences were found to have violated sections 97(1), 298(c), and 221(a) of the Penal Code Laws of Kano State.
