The newly National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Kabiru Turaki, has called on the United States President Donald Trump and the international community to intervene in Nigeria’s worsening political situation.
Turaki said Nigeria’s democracy wasbeing threatened by a lingering and escalating internal squabbles in the PDP that erupted into chaos in Abuja.
He told journalists outside the party’s national secretariat in Wadata Plaza on Tuesday, that the country’s political situation was suffering a serious decline which demands urgent international attention and intervention.
Turaki accused the faction loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, of bring armed thugs to disrupt party activities to prevent his faction from accessing the premises.
He said, “I want to call on President Trump. What is at stake is not just genocide against Christians; he should come and save democracy in Nigeria. Democracy is under threat. I am calling all other developed nations, all advanced democracies, come and save Nigeria.”
Turaki vowed that his faction will make the ultimate sacrifice to defend the party’s mandate and Nigeria’s democracy, saying “I have said it, we are willing to lay down our lives to protect our office, to protect democracy and to protect our mandate,” he added.
Chaos erupted at the PDP National Secretariat on Tuesday as both factions clashed and tried to outdo each other to hold meetings in the complex.
The situation caused serious tension as police men brought in the Wike faction and their counterparts on the entourages of PDP governors clashed.
There was firing of gun and teargas at the secretariat forcing the politicians, PDP secretariat staff and journalists to scamper for their safety.
