At least 28 villagers have drowned in Duma community in Tureta local government area of Sokoto while escaping bandits attack.
Tureta, which shares border with Zamfara state, has been a target of bandits attack recently.
The tragedy happened on Wednesday, it was learned.
Our correspondent gathered that the victims had since been buried according to Islamic rites.
A resident said, “we were in our village when we started hearing gunsshot in the nearby villages.
“We thought we were being attacked by bandits and as a result of that we started running for our lives.
“Some of our people ran towards the stream and jumped inside in their quest to escape the attack.
“But 28 of them were drowned and their bodies were recovered and buried in accordance to the Islamic rites,” he said
Sokoto State Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal in a statement by his spokesperson, Muhammad Bello, had visited the community on Saturday.
He was accompanied by all the heads of security agencies in the state.
Tambuwal extended his heartfelt sympathy to the community and relatives of the victims.
He said he was there on behalf of the government and people of the state to commiserate with them over the incident which left about 28 people dead.
The governor directed the immediate release of relief materials to IDPs in the area.
