Goods worth millions of naira have been destroyed following a fire outbreak at Sokoto fruits and Yam Market, popularly called Kasuwan Daji.
An eyewitness told 21st CENTURY CHRONICLE that the fire started around 11:30am on Wednesday.
The Chairman, Sokoto Traders Association, Alhaji Chika Sarkin Gishiri said the fire destroyed over 150 shops.
He said the fire came shortly after some of the marketers received new stocks which were also razed down.
“It is too early to ascertain the extent of damage caused by the fire but it runs into millions of naira,” he said
The state Commissioner of Commerce and Industry, Bashir Gidado Jegawa, who visited the scene of the incident, consoled the traders and assured them that the government would set up a committee to assess the level of damage for onward support to the victims.
The cause of the fire was still unknown as at the time of filing this report.
