Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, the Iranian Foreign Minister, and his Saudi counterpart addressed the current developments in bilateral relations, emphasizing the importance of promoting collaboration between the two countries.
On Friday evening, Amir-Abdollahian spoke by phone with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud.
The Iranian foreign minister expressed his satisfaction with the progress of mutual agreements, including the face-to-face meeting of the two countries’ foreign ministers, the announcement of the resumption of diplomatic relations, and the dispatch of technical teams to reopen embassies and consulates.
Amir-Abdollahian emphasized that the Islamic Republic of Iran is planning to reopen its embassy and consulates in Saudi Arabia.
Amir-Abdollahian emphasized that the Islamic Republic of Iran is planning to reopen its embassy and consulates in Saudi Arabia.
He hailed the planned meetings between senior Iranian and Saudi officials as evidence of the two countries’ strong determination to cooperate and build intimate relations.
The Saudi foreign minister, for his part, stated that Riyadh sees bright prospects for relations with Tehran and will go to any length to strengthen them.
“We have taken good steps in the past two months, and our adherence to the signed agreements shows our steely determination,” he said.
The top Saudi diplomat also pointed to Iran’s age-old participation and important role in the establishment of world peace and development through multi-polar structures ever since the formation of the League of Nations, which lasted for 26 years and was replaced by the United Nations (UN) in 1946.
“Iran’s interaction and presence in international multi-polar structures dates back to more than one hundred years ago. Campaigns of pressure against the Iranian government and nation have never managed to undermine the country’s prominent position in international spheres,” Prince Faisal noted.
On Thursday, Amir-Abdollahian revealed that Saudi Arabia had selected a new ambassador to Tehran.
According to IRNA, “Saudi Arabia introduced its new ambassador to Tehran the previous day,” and Iran will name its new ambassador to the kingdom soon.
According to the provisions of the March 10 agreement, both countries promised to designate new ambassadors and reopen their embassies within two months. “My colleagues have been working tirelessly for weeks to prepare the embassy and consulate for reopening,” Amir-Abdollahian explained.
On April 6, the foreign ministers of Iran and Saudi Arabia met for the first time in seven years, emphasizing the importance of implementing the China-brokered accord.
Both parties have praised the detente as having the ability to reduce tensions in the Middle East region.
Saudi Arabia severed diplomatic relations with Tehran in January 2016 when Iranian demonstrators stormed the Saudi embassy in Tehran, enraged over the Saudi government’s death of famous Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr Baqir al-Nimr.
