States and local governments should be thoroughly scrutinised by media executives the way they do to the Federal Government.
President Bola Tinubu made the call on Friday night when he hosted media proprietors and executives at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, Abuja.
The President said the Local Governments now enjoy greater financial autonomy under his reformed federalism, adding that “we’ve opened up the principle of federalism to the extent that local governments are now getting their money.”
He therefore told the media executives to interrogate the third tier of government and told them “don’t bombard me alone.”
Tinubu revealed that states no longer borrow money to pay workers’ salaries because of the reforms his admission put in place.
He added that “yes, we can complain it’s not enough, but we have to manage what we have to sustain today, survive tomorrow, and make progress.”
The pressure praised media proprietors for their relentless criticism, which he said challenged him to perform better despite the harsh commentary during his early days in office.
“Thank you for inspiring me and challenging me in critical moments of my life.
“If I look at various barrages of negative comments as opposed to positive aspects of the assignment, I shouldn’t be here standing. That is the truth.”
