President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a $500,000 contribution to cover Nigeria’s outstanding obligations to the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) for the period 2022–2023.
Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Musa Dangiwa, disclosed this at the second meeting of the UN-Habitat 2024 Executive Board, which he chaired in Nairobi, Kenya.
According to a statement from the ministry on Thursday, the contribution is part of Nigeria’s financial commitment under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with UN-Habitat and will directly support the operations of the UN-Habitat Country Office in Nigeria.
Dangiwa highlighted that the funding would strengthen Nigeria’s partnership with UN-Habitat, advancing capacity-building, advisory services, and multi-bilateral fund mobilisation efforts to drive sustainable urbanisation and housing development in the country.
“Nigeria remains steadfast in its commitment to UN-Habitat. Just last week, our President approved a $500,000 contribution to cover Nigeria’s outstanding obligations for 2022–2023, reaffirming our dedication to the organization through our partnership framework,” Dangiwa stated.
According to the minister, as quoted in the statement, Nigeria’s contribution aligns with the terms of the MoU for the 2022–2027 period, fostering collaboration on key projects such as sustainable housing development, infrastructure improvement, and addressing urbanization challenges.
He said the partnership aims to leverage both national and international expertise and resources to tackle Nigeria’s growing urban challenges.
The statement noted that UN-Habitat commended Nigeria for its commitment to transformative change in human settlements and urban development.
