President Bola Tinubu has appointed Emir of Kano Aninu Ado Bayero as Chairman of the National Ramadan Feeding Committee.
This was announced in a statement issued and signed by the spokesperson of Emir Bayero, Abubakar Balaraba Kofar Na’isa, at the weekend.
The statement said the appointment was conveyed during a visit by a Federal Government delegation to the monarch at his palace in Gidan Nasarawa, Kano state.
He said the delegation sent to the monarch include the National Imam of the Abuja National Mosque, Prof. Muhammad Kabir, as well as officials from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Permanent Secretary Engr. Muhammad Adamu, Deputy Director of Logistics, Alhaji Yahaya Abdulhadi, Malam Muktar Sarki, and Alhaji Alhassan Ibrahim.
The statement said the delegation explained that the Kano emir was selected based on merit and his capacity to provide effective leadership for the assignment.
They noted that the committee is a Federal Government initiative aimed at serving the public during the holy month of Ramadan.
They said the committee will oversee the distribution of essential food items, including rice, millet, and cooking oil, to beneficiaries across the country.
It added that in previous years, the Ramadan feeding programme was largely limited to hosting selected leaders for Iftar with the President, stating that the new directive expands the initiative to include food distribution across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.
It was reported that the committee will operate under the coordination of the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
The statement said the delegation expressed confidence in the Emir Bayero’s ability to provide the leadership required to ensure the programme’s success.
In his remarks, the Kano monarch commended the Federal Government for expanding the scope of the Ramadan feeding initiative, describing the move as timely and impactful, while assuring that the committee would discharge its responsibilities diligently.
