President Bola Tinubu on Friday affirmed his belief in a credible opposition, saying democracy thrives on healthy competition and constructive engagement among political actors.

Tinubu stated this at the Eighth National Convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC) held at the Eagle Square, Abuja.

“Let me reiterate, we do not seek a one-party state. Democracy thrives on vibrant and healthy competition.

“As a statesman and political leader, I believe in a credible opposition that can challenge, question and help refine policies.”

He said such engagement was essential for improving governance, strengthening statecraft, and advancing national development across democratic societies.

Tinubu described the convention as a defining moment in the party’s history, offering an opportunity to renew commitment to its founding ideals and national objectives.

“This convention is not merely a gathering; it is a defining chapter in the story of our democracy and our party.”

He said the APC was founded as a platform for national transformation, not just a vehicle for political ambition and electoral victories.

“We must also remind ourselves that this party is not merely a vehicle specially built to carry ambitious politicians to electoral victories.

“It was founded as a vehicle for national transformation, a home for anybody who wants to build a Nigeria where governance works, institutions function and opportunities abound for all citizens.”

The president emphasised unity as the party’s greatest strength, warning against divisions driven by personal ambition and internal conflicts.

“Our greatest strength has never been in our size, but in our unity. We must guard against ego overriding ideology.”

Tinubu urged party members to remain disciplined and focused, stressing that internal cohesion was critical to sustaining political success and national relevance.

He called on delegates, aspirants, and stakeholders to conduct themselves with integrity and respect throughout the convention proceedings.

Tinubu also paid tribute to the party’s founding members and late leaders, including former President Muhammadu Buhari.

“Let us honour those who built this platform with courage and conviction, and ensure their vision is not diminished,” he said.

On governance, Tinubu said his administration had remained focused on delivering reforms despite global economic challenges and domestic pressures.

He noted progress in infrastructure development, tax reforms, social investment programmes, and efforts to strengthen national security.

“The sacrifices we are making today are laying the foundation for a more prosperous Nigeria tomorrow.”

Tinubu said Nigeria had recorded improvements in key economic indicators, including declining inflation, rising investor confidence, and sustained economic activity growth.

He added that reforms in the oil and gas sector had attracted renewed foreign investment and strengthened the country’s fiscal outlook.

The president acknowledged ongoing challenges, including electricity supply constraints and legacy debts in the power sector.

He said the planned establishment of the Grid Asset Management Company (GAMCO) would help improve transmission capacity and boost electricity supply nationwide.

Tinubu also addressed young people and women, urging greater participation in politics and governance at all levels.

“To the youth, you are not just the future but the hope of this nation. We must open more doors for your participation.

“To women, your role is essential. A party that empowers women is stronger and more resilient.”

He commended the Convention Planning Committee and party leaders for organising what he described as a successful and impactful event.

Tinubu urged newly elected party officials to lead with integrity, fairness, and commitment to the party’s ideals and democratic values.

“The future of our party and Nigeria’s democracy depends on your leadership. Lead with courage, integrity, and vision,” he said.
