A new report by digital analytics company App Annie has revealed that TikTok was the world’s most downloaded app in 2020.
TikTok took the top spot from Facebook Messenger.
Facebook-owned apps have held the top spot in downloads since the survey started in 2018. The Apps owned by Mark Zuckerberg make up the top five – WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and Facebook Messenger.
The China-owned video-sharing platform is the only app not owned by Facebook to make the global top five downloads of 2020.
In China, TikTok’s owner ByteDance also holds the top spot with the Chinese language video app Douyin.
In 2020, former President Donald Trump issued an executive order to ban new downloads of TikTok app in the US claiming that TikTok posed a national security risk, alleging the Chinese government had access to its user data, allegations the company denied.
