The Police Command in Oyo State has so far arrested 1,216 drivers without third party vehicle insurance cover while on the highway.
The Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, Mr Johnson Adenola who revealed this, said about 111 of them have been charged to court while 425 were cleared after acquiring the third-party insurance.
He further said 680 cases are under investigations for different infractions.
“The enforcement has not been suspended, it is still very much in force in Oyo State,” the CP said.
“To ensure compliance, the Oyo State Police Command through its Public Relations Department, Community Policing unit and the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) embarked on series of advocacy campaigns and outreaches for the purpose of sensitising members of the public across every nook and cranny in these regards,” Adenola said.
The police boss urged motorists in the state to obtain third party vehicle insurance and other vehicle documents to avoid any disturbances.
It would be recalled that the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr Kayode Egbetokun, had given a Feb. 1 deadline to motorists to obtain insurance cover for their vehicles to be on the road.
Egbetokun directed Commissioners of Police in the states to apprehend motorists and impound vehicles on roads without insurance cover.
